Product Information
Who This Unit Is For
For a heat pump that is more advanced than single-stage without moving into Premier communicating equipment, the 17 Multi-Speed is the model to compare. This model used to be called the Trane XR17.
This is where the heat pump lineup starts to feel different. A single-stage heat pump is either on or off. The 17 Multi-Speed has more room to adjust, so it can run in lower speeds when the house does not need full output.
With the 17 Multi-Speed, Trane changed more than just the name. The current version uses R-454B refrigerant and an inverter-driven compressor, which gives the system multiple speeds instead of the older two-stage style of operation.
That’s a big reason we like this version. It still is not fully variable like the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™, but it gives you a lot of the same real-world benefit without requiring the top-of-the-line system.
What you’re really buying here is more advanced heating and cooling behavior at a mid-range price.
Key Features
- Energy Efficiency: Up to 17.1 SEER2 / 11 HSPF2
- Heating and Cooling Stages: Multiple
- Inverter-driven compressor
- Works with a two-stage thermostat
- Spine Fin™ Coil
- Demand Defrost for Coil
- Climatuff™ Compressor
Benefits
- Better heating and cooling control than basic single-stage heat pumps
- Runs in lower speeds when full output is not needed
- Good fit for homeowners who want advanced performance without Premier pricing
- Works with more thermostat options than Trane’s communicating systems
- Strong option for dual-fuel systems when matched correctly
Considerations
- Costs more than Trane’s basic single-stage heat pumps
- Not as quiet or smooth as the 18 TruComfort™ or 20 TruComfort™
- Does not include WeatherGuard™ Top
- May be more system than you need for a smaller home or short-term house
- Still needs proper sizing and airflow to do its job well
What Our Service Department Says
This is the point in the lineup where we’d start asking more questions about how the house actually feels in both summer and winter.
The 17 Multi-Speed gives the system more ways to run, which is the whole reason to look at it. We also like that it gives homeowners a more advanced heat pump without forcing them into a full communicating Premier system.
But it still has to be set up right. If the ductwork is weak or the system is oversized, you can still end up disappointed. The equipment is better, but the install still matters.
Pricing
Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump is between $8,400 to $10,700. This price includes installation and a matching indoor coil.
Smaller units with easier installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or tougher install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.
If you want this same general tier with WeatherGuard™ protection, compare it against the Trane 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard™.

Compatible Furnaces
The 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump should be paired with indoor equipment that can support the reason you’re buying it.
We may recommend a more capable indoor option than we would with a basic single-stage heat pump, depending on your home, ductwork, and comfort goals.
Warranty
- 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts
Installation
With the 17 Multi-Speed, the estimate should be about more than replacing the old box outside. We want to know what you’re hoping the new system fixes.
Sometimes this model is the right step up. Sometimes a single-stage heat pump is enough. And sometimes the home needs a bigger airflow or dual-fuel conversation before any heat pump model will solve the problem.
